NMF Kennels · Dog breeding
Bred for protection. Raised on the farm.
Four working breeds — German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Rottweiler and Boerboel — bred from proven pedigree lines and raised at Kyankwanzi. Health-screened, pedigreed, and trained for guard, protection and family work.
Our story
The history of dog breeding at NMF
Putting our passion for dogs aside — especially large breeds — the impetus for establishing a professional canine (K9) dog breeding unit at the farm was largely driven by the need for farm security. Without a shadow of a doubt, most farms in Uganda face insecurity: ranging from petty thieves to those who come with the intention to steal, plunder, and kill. Faced with such threats and sporadic thefts, it dawned on us to decisively deploy Guard and Protection Dogs.
The farm is now well secured by trained and highly protective dogs. The safety of the farm and all immovable and biological assets — as Accounting Standards define livestock — are thoroughly protected.
The pleasure and benefit of having working dogs are phenomenal. Having dogs at the farm taught us a great deal about them, and created in us a passion and the drive to share the benefits of well-looked-after, trained, and bred dogs with individuals, families, and many others who believe in not having just any dog, but a well-bred dog with a clear lineage history.
Our security need grew into the goal to selectively breed, groom, and train guard and protection dogs whose value can be shared with YOU. Our dog breeding and training programme is carried out under the brand name NMF Kennels — a key business unit of Nimukama Mixed Farm.
“Quality is not expensive — it is priceless.”
The breeding principle behind every NMF litter.
What dogs do we breed?
Whereas there are many dog breeders out there, few follow ethical breeding standards or care to breed dogs with superior pedigree lines. We take the time to source dogs from the best-known pedigree lines in the world — and we believe that standard must never be compromised.
For example, one of our Malinois males is an important offspring of Berry II — winner of the 2010 KNPV Stud Dog Trial in the Netherlands. Berry II has gone on to father many Police and Military Grade dogs and has been exported out of the Netherlands. The Belgian Malinois is phenomenal.

The breeds
Four working breeds, one standard
Each breed earns its place on the farm — chosen for proven working ability, sound health, superior pedigree lines, and a temperament suited to guarding a home, estate, or family.

Germany
German Shepherd
The German Shepherd Dog has evolved into many breed types in many countries, and even many offshoot breeds all claiming to be improvements on their progenitor. At NMF Kennels we work exclusively with working-line German Shepherds — bred for drive, temperament and health.

Germany
Rottweiler
The Rottweiler originated from Germany where one of its uses was to herd livestock and pull carts to market. It is one of the oldest herding breeds with a history possibly dating back to the Roman Empire — a descendant of ancient Roman drover dogs.

Boerboel
"Boerboel" derives from "boer" (Afrikaans for farmer) and "boel" (old slang for dog) — the farmer's dog. It is the only South African breed created to defend the homestead, and should be pronounced "boo-r-bull".

Milestone · 2019
The official launch of NMF Kennels Uganda
In 2019, what had started as the farm's own security unit was formally introduced to the public as NMF Kennels Uganda — a dedicated home for breeding and training working dogs at Kyankwanzi.
The launch brought together guests, handlers and the community for live demonstrations of the kennels' protection-trained dogs, alongside a celebration of the farm and its people.
