This smaller, lighter, highly athletic breed is a cousin to the GSD, descending from Northern European sheepdogs, and developed in the Belgian town of Malines. The name Malinois is derived from the name of this town. It is short-haired, tan to brown (usually mahogany), with hairs agouti-ticked with black to varying degrees. It has a black mask and ears, and sometimes has white markings on the toes and chest.
The Malinois has a domed forehead, a long, square-cut muzzle and black nose, with ears pointed and fully erect. It has a square build in comparison to the German Shepherd, which has shorter hind legs but is otherwise similar.
Well-raised and trained Malinois are usually active, intelligent, friendly, protective, alert and hard-working. Belgian Malinois exhibit energy levels that are among the highest of all dog breeds. A typical Malinois will have puppy-like energy until the age of 3, though it is not uncommon for them to exhibit this energy level until the age of five. Many have excessively high prey drive.
The Malinois excels as a police and general service dog, and in sports such as French Ring, Mondio, KNPV and Schutzhund. The breed is used as a working dog for tasks including detection of explosives, accelerants (for arson investigation), and narcotics; tracking humans for suspect apprehension; and search and rescue missions. The U.S. Secret Service uses Belgian Malinois to guard the grounds of the White House.
The elite US Navy SEALs use the Belgian Malinois. Like their human counterparts, the dog SEALs are highly trained, highly skilled, highly motivated special ops experts — able to perform extraordinary military missions by Sea, Air and Land. These dogs are incredibly compact and fast, with a sense of smell 40 times greater than that of a human. Their small stature makes them ideal for parachuting and repelling missions with their handlers.
The SEALs were accompanied by a Belgian Malinois named Cairo during their raid on Osama Bin Laden in 2013. They have earned their place as War Dogs.
