The Boerboel

The word "Boerboel" derives from "boer" — the Afrikaans/Dutch word for "farmer". Boel is an old Dutch/Afrikaans slang word for dog. Boerboel, therefore, translates as either "farmer's dog" or "Boer's dog" and should be pronounced somewhat like "boo-r-bull" (not Burbull).

The Boerboel is the only South African dog breed created to defend the homestead.

It is generally believed that the breed was created from interbreeding native African landrace dogs, such as the Africanis, with breeds brought into South Africa by Dutch, French, and British settlers. Only the toughest, most capable dogs survived the harsh African environment — resulting in an exceptionally robust, confident and physically powerful breed.

The protective character of the Boerboel is still evident and much sought after, as is the calm, stable, and confident composure of the breed. The dogs are obedient and intelligent and have strong territorial instincts.

The Boerboel is a good choice for a guarding breed — well suited to the East African climate and the demands of farm and estate security.
